2013 NATIONAL ARCHITECTURE CONFERENCE – MATERIAL

Melbourne, 30 May to 1 June 2013 – Tickets now on sale!

The Institute of Architects is delighted to formally announce details of the 2013 National Architecture Conference – MATERIAL, which will take place in Melbourne from 31 May-01 June 2013.
Academic Sandra Kaji-O’Grady and architect John de Manincor, Creative Directors for the 2013 National Architecture Conference, developed the theme from their own research into this topic:
‘Those working in the industry are all too familiar with traditional building materials. Our intent is to go beyond what is known, to stimulate a reconsideration of ‘material’. Given the opposition between the material and the conceptual – between doing and thinking – we want to restore theory to questions of materiality.’
‘It is our ambition to deliver new knowledge and current research, as well as that annual injection of inspiration.’
The materialisation of built form is but one stand in the complex web of our discipline. Architecture’s material presence weaves around individual experience and defines the fabric of the city. The 2013 Conference will explore contemporary applications and ideas surrounding material in architecture.

The 2013 Conference will challenge existing assumptions about materials and go well beyond their technical specification or immediate physical presence. It will provide new insights into contemporary material experiments and applications, perhaps challenging existing notions of ‘materiality’. The potential of an ever-expanding vocabulary of new materials and techniques for shaping and making architecture will be presented. Discussions will address the aesthetic, spatial and environmental consequences of architecture’s materialisation
Early bird tickets are now available for the Conference. To take into account the current economic climate and its impact on our members, the Institute has frozen the price of all Conference ticket types to reflect the 2012 price. Early bird prices end on Monday, 22 April 2013.
